One of the readers corrected me in saying that Avantium is actually public. I think I knew this, but for some reason when I was writing today's issue I thought they were private for some reason. Avantium trades under AVTXF and is listed as a security in the US. Avantium has yet to generate positive cash flow.

I've always been interested in Novomer's stuff. Interesting technology. The thing that always concerns me about new mass-production plastic streams -- even if recyclable or compostable -- is how much will actually end up being composted or recycled.

I think if we can actually get PHAs at scale and commercial there is a good chance of us getting composting waste streams along with landfill and recycling streams. I have curbside composting now, but we need a flywheel effect for composting to really takeoff. There is so much in our landfill trash now that can be composted already.

For sure we can do that -- the trick is making sure that everything stays in the right stream. Everyone has to buy in. Here we've had curbside composting for about 15 years and people still don't get it, sadly (all kinds of uncompostable material gets into the compost bins, and vice versa)
