The problem is the surface modification. Look at carboxymethyl cellulose technology as a starting place and maybe do some grafting polymerizations from cellulose. There is a bunch of work that has been done on cellulose nanocrystals for this, should translate to macro cellulose as well.
Another great article...now if I can find a Janus for cellulose fibers in PLA or PE! Any suggestions?
